EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) Therapy is a powerful evidence-based therapy used to help people let go of different psychological and physical issues which appeared as a result of unresolved or unhealthily processed traumatic life events. These unresolved or unhealthily processed life events can manifest themselves in anxiety disorders, panic, insomnia, chronic pain, depression, substance abuse and functional gut disorders. Unless we process these traumatic events in adaptive ways and release the emotional charge we feel about them, we usually feel powerless to free ourselves from their influence.
Trauma affects how our memories are stored in the brain. Traumatic events overload our brain and as a result of it, our brain can’t make immediate sense of the event. The information processing system is disrupted and the memory in the form of fragmented painful images, sensations, feelings and thoughts associated with the traumatic event appear frozen into the present. We feel hijacked emotionally and physically by these strong fragmented images, sensations, feelings or thoughts and as a coping tool we try to block them, to dissociate from them. With time, unresolved trauma can lead to different psychological and physical health issues, making our life a struggle.
The EMDR process allows you in a safe and supportive way to become desensitized to the images, sensations and feelings associated with the traumatic events. It removes the emotional charge from those events and allows you to develop helpful and empowering thoughts and beliefs about yourself. As a result of EMDR those events can be filed away as a fully processed memory, without the emotional charge, just like other past events that you’ve processed and filed away as past memories.
The initial part of EMDR includes facilitating the clients to build the necessary inner resources for them to feel empowered and learn to regulate their emotions and bodily sensations more effectively. After that the adaptive processing and desensitization takes place in a safe, supportive and compassionate environment. The 3rd stage allows the client to develop helpful and empowering thoughts and beliefs about themselves, while having no longer emotional charge about the past events.
